MaineDOT to Begin Construction Activity at I-295 Exit 5

Beginning Wednesday evening, July 8th at 7:00 p.m., work will begin to make I-295 Exit 5 a southbound on-ramp. This project is being performed to accommodate motorists who may wish to avoid upcoming construction activity at Exit 4 just off the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Motorists will be able to use the Fore River Parkway (Portland Connector) to access I-295 South, as a series of highway-safety improvements begin along the I-295 corridor in Portland and South Portland. Crews will remove part of the median on the Fore River Parkway to allow all traffic to use Exit 5 as a southbound alternative to Exit 4. (See map below)

Safety improvements to I-295 are getting under way this week and include construction of additional lanes in each direction of I-295 between Exits 3 and 4. These additional lanes will make entering and exiting the highway safer in this highly congested area. Crews will install a cable guardrail in the median between the northbound and southbound lanes of I-295 between Exits 3 and 4 and a “sound wall” will be installed on the northbound side of I-295.

Motorists are asked to plan ahead and allow for delays, as day and nighttime construction is expected to continue until December 1st. Maine State Police will assist with traffic control on occasion and fines will be doubled for speeding through work zones. Shaw Brothers of Gorham is the contractor for the $5.3 million project and they expect to complete construction by December 1st.
