Starting Monday, October 26 and continuing until Thursday, November 5, The Maine Department of Transportation must close a section of Route 160 on the Hiram/Porter town line in order to replace the Mill Pond Bridge over Ridlon Brook.
Crews will work quickly to remove the existing corrugated metal culvert bridge, then replace it with a pre-cast concrete box culvert that will be transported to the bridge site and placed into position by crane onto poured concrete footings. If construction goes as planned, crews will then backfill around the pre-cast bridge, pave over the bridge, then reopen the road by November 5.
During the road closure, there will be a signed detour directing traffic to the South Hiram Road and Route 25. Variable message board signs will also be in place alerting motorists to the closure and detour.
The bridge replacement is part of a larger project on Maine Street/Route 160 that includes the installation of new sidewalks and granite curbing, three new catch basins and drainage pipes. While the bridge replacement will be complete by the first week of November, construction work on the road will continue until November 20, at which point it will suspend for winter, and restart near the end of April. Crews expect to complete the project in early May. During construction, there will be alternating, one-way traffic controlled by flaggers.
CPM Constructors, Inc, of Freeport, Maine is the contractor for the $375,000 project.
