Motorists should expect delays

The I-295 Exit 4 Southbound on-ramp in South Portland will be closed starting Tuesday, August 4 at 8 p.m. Motorists will be detoured onto the Fore River Parkway (Portland Connector) and should expect delays in accessing I-295 Southbound.

Access to Route 1 Southbound via the Veterans Memorial Bridge will remain open. Northbound traffic across the bridge will not be affected. The Exit 4 on-ramp is expected to remain closed through September 15.

Crews are closing the Exit 4 on-ramp in order to construct an additional lane to I-295 between Exits 3 and 4. This work is part of a $5.3 million upgrade to I-295 in South Portland. These improvements will make the highway safer for motorists through an additional lane for entering and exiting the highway, as well as a cable guardrail separating the north- and southbound lanes. Crews have already installed cable guardrails in the median and will be installing a soundwall between exits 3 and 4 on the northbound side. The entire project is expected to continue until December.

MaineDOT asks that motorists drive with caution and maintain the speed limit while traveling. Motorists who reduce speed to observe construction activities have added to traffic delays and safety concerns over the past weeks.
