Route 1 Yarmouth Roadwork to start next week
The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) will conduct a major pavement overlay project on Route 1 in Yarmouth beginning on Monday, August 4. The project will begin at the intersection with Portland Street on its south end and continue just over 8/10ths of a mile to Forest Falls Drive on its north end. As the project gets under way, motorists may experience delays at certain locations and times where traffic flow is restricted.
This paving project on Route 1 in Yarmouth will involve milling the pavement some areas where the existing pavement is damaged, followed by a pavement overlay across the full width of Route 1. The project will also involve guardrail repairs and drainage improvements, such as ditching, culvert work, and placement of "rip rap" to stabilize slopes. The main work is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 3, but some limited shoulder and culvert work could begin as early as this Wednesday, July 30.
"We'll do our best to keep traffic moving smoothly," says Tony Fontaine, MaineDOT's resident inspector on the project. "While the project is in progress, our contractor is required to maintain two-way traffic whenever possible, and we expect to be able to keep traffic going in both directions for the great majority of the time." In certain locations where two-way traffic can't always be maintained, the traffic management plan allows for establishment of alternating one-way traffic between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., after morning peak commuting hours and before peak afternoon commuting hours.
In-town Yarmouth Route 1 carries heavy traffic at certain times of the day, and motorists should expect delays. Drivers may want to consider allowing extra time for their trips, or using alternate routes. As on all highway projects, motorists are strongly urged to observe all signage and use special caution while driving through the work area, including those areas where flaggers may be regulating traffic.
CPM Constructors of Freeport is the state's contractor on the project. Depending upon the weather, MaineDOT and the contractor anticipate the work will be completed by August 29.
