MaineDOT will close one lane of Kennedy Memorial Drive to treat bridge pier
On Tuesday, July 21 and Wednesday, July 22, MaineDOT will close one of the two inbound traffic lanes on Kennedy Memorial Drive (Route 11 north, Route 137 south) in order to apply a protective coating on one of the I-95 bridge piers.
This experimental coating is one of the new technologies MaineDOT is researching in order to protect the state’s transportation infrastructure. The coating MaineDOT is using to protect the bridge’s concrete is similar to the coating used on truck bodies. MaineDOT is treating one pier, and leaving the other as is, and will monitor the piers to determine the coating’s effectiveness. Both piers were rehabilitated two years ago.
In order to apply the coating, MaineDOT must erect a temporary barrier to ensure containment of the material that is sprayed onto the bridge concrete, necessitating the lane closure. MaineDOT expects the lane closure to last two days. In the case of inclement weather, crews will utilize Thursday, July 23.
