Cony Traffic Circle Work To Start Monday

MaineDOT announced today that a collaborative traffic improvement project at Cony Circle in Augusta will begin Monday, September 15. This project is designed to accommodate the additional traffic generated by the new Hannaford store that will be located at the old Cony High School site. Hannaford Bros.is partnering with the city of Augusta and MaineDOT in the funding and design of the project. The new store is scheduled to open in June, 2009.

Work on the traffic circle and approach islands will be conducted at night between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. During the construction, two-way traffic will be maintained at all times, but traffic flow frequently will be reduced to one lane in each direction until mid-November. Paving work on the circle will done on Saturdays to lessen the traffic impact. Work on roads leading to the circle will be done during the day.

Motorists accessing the circle from Cony, Stone, Bangor and Bridge streets should expect delays and are urged to allow extra travel time or to take an alternate route as a result of the project. The work includes widening the circle and the roads leading into it, as well as new curbing and traffic signals.

“This project that will improve safety and traffic flow at the circle, as well as help with the increased traffic associated with the new Hannaford store,” said Steve Landry, MaineDOT traffic engineer. “We’re asking motorists to be patient as we move forward with improvements that will provide a long-term benefit to the Augusta area.”
