Along The Rails A Survey of Maine’s Historic Railroad Buildings Kirk F. Mohney, Editor
In 1994 The Maine Department of Transportation and Maine Historic Preservation Commission collaborated and funded a survey to identify the extant of railroad stations in the State. The survey was funded through the Enhancement Program of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA). The survey produced a book (published in 2000) that celebrates the architectural legacy of railroading. Through historic photographs and drawings, as well as in two documentary catalogues, Along the Rails describes the design history of passenger stations and records the various facilities that supported maintenance of track and rolling stock. Although buildings are the central topic of this volume, the development of Maine’s railroad system is discussed in an introductory chapter and through a detailed chronology. The front cover of the book, shown on the left of the page, includes a photo of the Maine Central Railroad Depot, Warren, circa 1910. Other photographs are displayed below.
