Public Process

MaineDOT has been working with South Bristol since 2009 and, together, developed specific criteria to guide the design of the bridge. The new bridge should:

  • Allow marine and vehicular traffic;
  • Carry two lanes of traffic and two shoulders;
  • Last at least 75 years;
  • Accommodate a minimum of 20,000 openings a year;
  • Be reliable;
  • Allow car and pedestrian traffic while construction is underway;
  • Be aligned so that no buildings or businesses need to be acquired.

Based on these parameters, as well as initial and life-cycle costs, a European/Dutch style Heel Trunnion Bascule replacement bridge is recommended.

An added benefit of this bridge will be minimal noise created when opening and closing. A new bridge deck configuration will provide improved safety for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
