The Surface Water Quality Unit is a multi-disciplinary staff that provides technical assistance to the Department in erosion and sedimentation control, storm water management and other surface water concerns in the State of Maine. The Unit offers training to MaineDOT staff and consultants in surface water quantity and quality concerns. They also assist the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP), Nonpoint Source Training and Resource Center in training Certified Contractors in Erosion Control Practices.

Through a Storm water Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the MDEP, the Unit oversees the implementation of a temporary erosion and sediment control standard for all MaineDOT construction projects. Each year we provide report to the MDEP summarizing these activities.

The unit is also a primary contact for the general public regarding concerns with storm water quality impacts from MaineDOT facilities.
