Natural Resource Mitigation Unit

The Mitigation Unit directs and coordinates compensatory mitigation for impacts to Wetland resources caused by transportation projects throughout the State. Compensation is required when Federal and State regulatory agencies determine, for permitting purposes, that construction activities in wetland areas reach or exceed impact thresholds.

Compensating usually includes restoring, enhancing, preserving or creating wetlands to replace functions and values lost when existing wetlands are degraded or destroyed by construction activities. The Unit Staff provides management, scientific, and technical expertise necessary to successfully mitigate impacts.
