MaineDOT Environmental Office

Mission:  The Environmental Office leads the department in proactively integrating transportation and environmental objectives and innovations as the department plans, develops, operates and maintains Maine's transportation needs.

Throughout Maine DOT's major planning and policy documents its environmental vision and plans are outlined.  Pages 21 of the Twenty Year Plan (Fall 2003 revisions being drafted), page 19 of the Six Year Plan, and 21 of the Biennial Transportation Improvement Program and other pages of those documents provide detailed descriptions of ways in which the Department integrates environmental stewardship objectives in plans and projects throughout the Department.

The Department also adopted an environmental policy statement in 1998 and revised it in 2004.  This policy, rooted in the Sensible Transportation Policy Act of 1991, and the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, is the guidepost for all steps taken by the Department to protect and enhance the natural and cultural environment in Maine.

Even MaineDot's maintenance and operations practices are managed with an eye towards protecting the environment.  MaineDOT maintains a successful Environmental Management System (EMS).  Descriptions of this program are found as a component of the:
