MaineDOT Context Sensitive Solutions

Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) is a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach that involves all stakeholders in providing a transportation facility that fits its setting. This approach leads to preserving and enhancing scenic, aesthetic, historic, community, and environmental resources, while improving or maintaining safety, mobility, and infrastructure conditions.

MaineDOT has been utilizing CSS principles for decades and the Maine Sensible Transportation Policy Act {link} initiated in 1991 via citizen referendum requires certain stakeholder and public involvement mechanisms which are now tried and true CSS principles. MaineDOT’s rule under this Act was revised in 2003 with particular attention toward recognizing the relationship between transportation and land use planning while maximizing the opportunity for stakeholder involvement.

MaineDOT has also utilized this process to formalize our approach to CSS including this website which describes CSS in Maine in more detail and offers information about past and current CSS Projects.
