Mailbox Policy Along Public Roads

Mailbox installations have been allowed on the edges of Maine’s public roads and highways for decades and they are usually within the road right-of-way. However it is important to recognize that 1) the mailbox must be installed in accordance with USPS guidelines so the mail can be delivered and 2) the mailbox does not create an obstacle or safety hazard to those that use or maintain the highway.

The MaineDOT has a mailbox policy for state and state aid highways and is shown below. Municipalities could adopt the same policy by using the model noted below that has been modified to apply to municipal roads.
