augusta outer western avenue project

Augusta Outer Western Avenue Project

Reconstruction of a half-mile section of Western Ave continues through the 2014 construction season. Lengthy utility relocation delays, as well as unexpected ledge that was encountered with some of the underground work, means that finish work will continue into June 2015.

Before leaving the construction site for the winter of 2014, all the base pavement will have been placed, lanes will be fully open and signals will be working. However, finished sidewalks, final paving and some minor clean up items will be completed by late June, 2015.

The following elements of this $3.8 million project are completed or underway:

  • Water and sewer lines have been upgraded and a natural gas main has been installed and is ready for service lines.
  • Aerial utilities have completed their transfer to new installations and old utility poles have been removed.
  • Excavation/gravel operations are progressing on the south side of Western Avenue.
  • Base pavement for this section of roadway has been scheduled for the week of Sept. 15.
  • Excavation and gravel placement will progress from right to left (south to north) in phases, one lane at a time. The intent is to keep the travelling public from driving on a gravel roadway for weeks at a time.
  • Install curbing and raise catch basins to allow for drainage during winter suspension should be completed by early December.
