Solid Waste Disposal

Residential Trash Collection:

Regular domestic household waste is picked up weekly on Fridays. Trash should be in heavy-duty trash bags or covered containers and be roadside by 7:00 AM earch Friday to ensure pickup. Containers should not weigh more than 40 pounds. This is for Residential trash only. Businesses must use an alturnative method to dispose of trash.

Pices of carpet must be cut into 4-foot sections, 1 tire not on a rim, aerosol cans that are empty, opened-dried-out cans of latex paint, and regular alkaline batteries are also accepted in the weekly pickup.

Household Recycling:

Regular household recycling is picked up roadside on the First and Third Friday of each month. Items should be placed in your blue recycling bin and set away from your regular household trash by 7:00 AM. If you have more items than will fit in the bun, plastic or paper bags may be used and placed on or around the blue bin.

Items that will be accepted as recyclables include:

  • Newspaper, Magazines, Catalogs, and Phone Books (No Manila Folders, Envelopes, File Folders, or Junk Mail)
  • Tin & Aluminum Cans (No aerosol cans)
  • Plastic Bottles (#2 on the bottom of bottle) Milk Jugs, Laundry Detergent, Bleach and Fabric Softener Bottles (No Butter, Yogort, Cat litter, Motor Oil, or Antifreeze Containters)
  • Gas Bottlesand Jars (No Light Bulbs or Window Glass)
  • Cardboard  - broken down and cut into pieces no larger than 3' x 3' (Remove all styrofoam and packing materials)

Blue recycling bins can be optainted from the municipal office. The first recyling bin is free and $5.00 for each additional bin.

The Town of Eddington contracts with Maine Waste Systems of Exeter, ME to pick up trash and recycling in Eddington. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Maine Waste Systems at 207-379-2031.

Items not accepted at roadside pickup can be taken to Pine Tree Landfill or Waste Management of Maine Transfer Station. You do not need a permit to go to either place. The Brewer Landfill is getting full and will no longer accept items from Eddington residents.

Pine Tree Landfill, 368 Emerson Mill Road, Hampden, Maine, 207-862-4200. Open Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. $84.00 per ton of demolition debris. No food waste.

Waste Management of Maine Transfer Station, 198 Dirigo Drive, Brewer, Maine, 207-989-5278. Open Monday thru Friday 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM and the first Saturday of each month from 8:00 AM to Noon.

Waste Management Fees:

  • Tires (Car $2.00, Pickup $5.00, Large Truck $75.00, Equipment $150.00)
  • Appliances: (Small $5.00, Large $10.00, Small w/ Freon $20.00, Large w/ Freon $35.00)
  • Mattresses $10.00
  • Building/demolition debris (regular, includes organic materials) price per load (Car $3.00, Station Wagons $5.00, Pickup Truck & Utility Trailers $15.00)
  • Building/demolition debris (heavy items): 7 cents per pound or $140.00 per ton
  • Good clean wood: $60.00 per ton

Composting:

In an effort to reduce waste disposal costs in town, we would like to encourage people in town to compost their grass, leaves, and table scraps. We are participating in a program that offers Compost Bins for $36.50 and Kitchen Pails for $10.50 to residents through Maine Resource and Recovery. We have a bin on display at the Town Office. Please call if you would like further information. Contact the State Planning Office or check their website at www.recyclemaine.com for information on composting.
