Time: 07:00 - 09:00

Location: Fire House

Meeting Minutes:

Alna Facilities Planning Committee Meeting, February 4, 2008, held at the Firehouse at 7 p.m.

Present: Gordon Davis (GD), John Green (JG), Fred Gumkowski (FG) and Cliff Russell (CR)

Absent: Tom Albee (TA), Nick Caristo (NC), Brian Lawrence and Kathy Pendleton (KP)

Also present:   Mike Trask, Roger Whitney and Paul Ouellette from the AVFD

The meeting was devoted entirely to a review of the list of specifications for the proposed enlargement and renovation of the existing firehouse, as offered to the committee by the VFD at the meeting of January 28th.   The goals of the review were:

  • To make sure all involved understood each specification in the same way;
  • To set the stage for an updated project cost estimate to be available for the first public information meeting currently planned for February 19th at the firehouse;
  • To divide the listed items into priority classes along the following lines:
    • Immediate requirements of the VFD, such as proper equipment bay doors;
    • Eventual, but postponable, VFD requirements, such as a comprehensive building alarm system covering smoke, loss of heat, and break-ins;
    • Immediate requirements for the town meeting space, such as ADA compliant doors and entrance/exit ramps;
    • Nice-to-have, but postponable, town meeting space features, such as ceiling fans;
    • Features that could be modified without loss of function in ways that would decrease building cost, such as the originally proposed change in kitchen location and the design of the “mezzanine” office layout to the north of the existing bays;
    • Features that might be eliminated to save money, such as several windows in the south wall of the new town meeting room;
    • Items that require further comparative cost work, such as the choice of siding material for the new construction as well as for the existing building, the siding of which is deteriorating.

At the end of the meeting it seemed that the goals had been achieved, though it may still be desirable for VFD representatives to meet directly with Les Fossel and FG by way of follow up.

The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Monday, February 11, and its agenda will be development of the presentation to be made at the first public information meeting now scheduled for the 19th of February.

The committee adjourned at 9:00.
