RE-REGISTRATION REMINDERS.  Due to increased costs and the time associated processing post cards, the Town Office is no longer mailing reminder cards.  However, the State has an on-line service that will e-mail you when your registration is due.   To use this service, visit:  http://www.informe.org/cgi-bin/bmv/rapid-renewal/rr-remindme

RE-REGISTRATION FEES.  Automobile registration renewal fees (see bottom of page for trucks) are computed as follows:

Total = State fee + Excise tax + Agent fee ($3.00).

State fee - the standard Chickadee plate fee is $35.00.  The following specialty plates are an additional $20.00 for the first year and $15.00 for each subsequent year: Conservation (Loon), University of Maine (Black Bear and UM System), Agriculture, Support your Troops, Breast Cancer Awareness and Sportsman … except the Sportsman/“Support Wildlife“ plate is $20.00 for the first year and $20.00 for renewals as well as new.   Vanity plates are an additional $25.00 (first-time must be obtained through Augusta BMV).    More information on specialty plates (fees and where the fees go) can be found under "Plates of Interest" at the following State website:  http://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/registration/index.html .  There is no extra fee for the Wabanaki specialty plate ( http://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/registration/wabanaki.html ).

Excise tax - excise tax is based on the sticker price (original list price) of the vehicle.   A mil rate of $24.00 per $1,000.00 is charged to a new vehicle.   The mil rate goes down every year until the vehicle is 6 years old.   The minimum rate is $4.00 per $1,000.00.   The sticker price is on your (yellow) registration as “Base.“   The “Mil rate” for your vehicle is on your (yellow) registration right below the “Base“ price.  Multiply the "Base" value times the "Mil Rate" and it equals your excise (“Local Ex Tax“).

Mil Rate.    The mil rates during the first 6 years of a vehicle are: 0.024, 0.0175, 0.0135, 0.010, 0.0065 and 0.004.

To compute your renewal excise fee, you find whatever "Mil Rate" is on your current (expiring) registration and use the next lowest rate (0.0175, 0.0135, 0.0100, 0.0065 or 0.004) to compute your excise tax (0.004 is the lowest rate).

Example 1. You have a Chickadee plate, Base value is $16,300 and Mil Rate on your expiring registration is 0.0135.

Renewal fee = State + Excise + Agent

                         = $35.00 + 0.010 x $16,300 + $3.00

                         = $35.00 + $163.00 + $3.00

                         = $201.00.

Example 2. You have a Chickadee plate, Base value of $17,000 and the Mil Rate on your expiring registration is 0.004.

Renewal fee = State + Excise + Agent

                         = $35.00 + .004 x $17,000 + $3.00

                         = $35.00 + $68.00 + $3.00

                         = $106.00.

Example 3.  You have a Support Our Troops plate, Base value of $18,000, and the Mil Rate on your expiring registration is 0.0240.

Renewal fee = (State) + Excise + Agent

                        = ($35.00 + $15.00) + .0175 x $18,000 + $3.00

                        = $50.00 + $315.00 + $3.00

                        = $368.00.

Example 4.  You have a Loon Vanity plate, Base value is $20,000 and the Mil Rate on your expiring registration is 0.010.

Renewal fee = (State) + Excise + Agent

                       = ($35.00 + $15.00 + $25.00) + 0.0065 x $20,000 + $3.00

                       = $75.00 + $130 + $3.00

                       = $208.00

Truck (Commercial) re-registration fees are computed the same as automobiles above  -- EXCEPT the State fees are based on the Registered Weight of the truck.  The Registered Weight of the truck is on the (yellow) registration (immediately to the left of Fuel).  In general, you should compute the Registered Weight of your vehicle based on the combined weight of the truck, the truck's cargo and the loaded trailer as applicable.    The State fees for trucks are at:  http://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/registration/trucktractorfees.html
