Located just west of Greenville in Piscataquis County, the Little Moose Management Unit covers more than 15,000 acres in Moosehead Junction and Big Moose townships. Although the forested land is flat to gently rolling in the southeastern quarter, the unit also includes most of the Little Moose Mountain Range with its steep slopes, rocky streams, and remote ponds, as well as most of Big Moose Mountain. Visitors enjoy hiking, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, and camping in this remote setting.

This moderate to challenging trail includes a 780-foot elevation gain between the lowest and highest points. The trailhead is located at the end of the East Moore Bog Rd. (off North Rd.), within the Little Moose Public Lands. Drive approximately 5 miles west from downtown Greenville and leave ME Rte. 6/15 turning onto the North Rd. (gravel), the primary entrance to the Little Moose Unit. Drive 3.6 miles in from Rt. 6/15, turning onto the East Moore Bog Rd. and traveling another 1.4 miles. Use caution when traveling these roads; please make way for logging trucks.

The trailhead for Big Moose Mountain Trail is 2 miles in on North Road from Rte. 6/15, on the right. This is a 2.2 mile out-and-back hike (one way) to the top of 3,150 foot Big Moose Mountain, with spectacular views of the Moosehead Lake region and leading past an old fire warden's cabin.
