Northeast Harbor Library—Serving the Town of Mount Desert and the Cranberry Isles

The Northeast Harbor Library serves its community with a newly expanded and fully handicapped accessible facility. The library has more of everything…books, videos, DVDs, audio books programs, patron access computers and much more.

In addition to the usual library services the Northeast Harbor Library has two special areas of interest to people looking for more information on our town, Mount Desert Island and the state of Maine.

Special Areas of Interest

The Center for Maine Studies

This room located on the second floor of the library contains over 2000 books and materials on subjects related to the Town of Mount Desert, Mount Desert Island and the State of Maine. The room is open during regular library hours. Some of the materials may be loaned but others must be used in the library.

The Archive area

The newly built archive area is climate controlled and contains manuscripts, typescripts, clippings, maps and charts, photographs and architectural prints and drawings including various town records. This area is available by appointment only and materials must be used in the library.

More Library Services

Children’s services

Parents and children are attracted to the bright and colorful children’s area. This room contains books, videos, DVDs, magazines all purchased with children in mind. This room is staffed with creative and friendly people who strive to make this room a comfortable and friendly place. The library offers a story time once a week and many special children programs in between. The Northeast Harbor Library also serves as the school library for the Mount Desert Elementary School across the street.

Young Adult area

This new area of comfy chairs, desk and computers attracts the after school teen set who want to lounge, browse the Internet or just hang out with friends. Nearby is a collection of young adult books for their perusal. Computers: The library has seven patron access computers available on a first come first serve basis for the use of the general public. The library also is a Wifi hotspot. Our wifi access is unsecured and is available in all rooms of the Library and immediately outside the building on the lawn and the street. A person only needs a laptop with a wireless card to access our connection.

Art work

It is worth a trip to the library just to see the art on the walls. As you venture through the door you are greeted by a large landscape by Sara Weeks Peabody. The library’s collection of art includes a set of bird prints by Charles Tyson and twenty four sailor woolies, folk art pieces depicting ships and other nautical scenes embroidered by British sailors before the 1900s.
