Governor signs three anti-obesity bills


AUGUSTA– During her lengthy career in a western Maine school system as a school nutritionist, Rep. Helen Rankin of Hiram worked to ensure that school children had access to healthy, nutritious food at school. In recent years, however, Rankin noticed a troubling trend. Effort would support waterfront and farmland preservation, make donating easements easier for families, and aid Maine-based food processing centers

AUGUSTA – Speaker of the House Hannah Pingree introduced legislation on Wednesday that would create local jobs, support Maine’s traditional industries, and protect the Maine Brand. The legislation calls for greater support for Maine’s working waterfronts, creating a fund to protect working farms from development and would assist businesses seeking to process Maine seafood, produce or livestock. Legislators to move forward on health initiatives

Coalition of legislators and health advocates seek to advance three new policies aimed at curbing obesity in Maine

AUGUSTA– With obesity rates continuing to rise in Maine, a group of legislators announced a legislative package at a press conference on Tuesday aimed at trimming those numbers. The lawmakers were joined by groups like the Maine Medical Association and the American Heart Association in calling for greater access to nutrition information for restaurant-goers, increased collection of children’s health data and for more physical education at Maine’s schools as part of a comprehensive approach to fighting obesity. Maine Legislative leaders sign on to national economic recovery effort
State Legislative leaders from around the nation call on Congress to address temporary relief for states


AUGUSTA– Maine’s Senate President and House Speaker are joining forces with their counterparts in NUMBER states to call on Congress to pass an economic recovery package that will supplement efforts already being made in state Legislative chambers. President Elizabeth Mitchell and Speaker Hannah Pingree have signed on to an effort to convince Congress to include efforts in any stimulus package that will help states take on their budget shortfalls of a cumulative $100 billion. Native of North Haven calls for inter-party cooperation and focus on renewable energy resources

AUGUSTA– Hannah Pingree of North Haven was sworn into office as Speaker of the House on Wednesday, becoming the 99th Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives and just the second woman ever to hold the office in the state. In her speech to the members of the House, Pingree called for bipartisan cooperation and for the creation of a legislative committee to focus on the creation of clean, Maine-based renewable energy resources.
