GROWING
MAINE FROM WITHIN: The Small Business Initiative
Update from the Calais Small Business Forum
Saturday, October 2, 2004, My Favorite Things, Calais
Jim Thompson of the Chamber of Commerce spoke of the need for
grants to get businesses started and help with matching funds.
Thompson said there was a need to weigh criteria for risk differently
in some areas of Maine. Having to prove you're in a growth area
and raising matching funds is problematic.
Marcia Carlow of H&R
Block brought up the need for accountability when businesses
receive a loan or grant. She thought there should
be some guarantee or pledge that the businesses stay in an area
for a specific term of time for a return on the investment. Small
businesses grow too quickly; need available guidance on what is
sustainable and info regarding risk. She said the 3-1-1 line should
be available 24/7, in combination with email and 1-800 line.
Many people spoke of
their concerns with insurance, especially Worker's Compensation
and health insurance. Greg & Cindy Pollock
of A&E Plumbing are concerned with their increasing liability
load and wonder how businesses will continue to afford health insurance
for employees.
Participants in the
discussion were: Jim Thompson-Chamber of Commerce, Marcia Carlow-H&R Block, Greg & Cindy Pollock-A&E Plumbing,
Donn King-Armstrong House, Paul Howbrigg-Calais Interiors & Appliances,
John Wakin, Melissa Royer-My Favorite Things, Joyce Scott-The Downeast
Times.
Legislators in attendance
were: Rep. Anne Perry D-Calais, Rep. Ed Pellon D-Machias, Rep.
Al Goodwin D-Pembroke and Rep. George
Bunker D-Kossuth Township.
