Senator Jerry Davis

Senator Jerry Davis earned his BA in History from Bates College and his Masters in History and Education from the University of Southern Maine.

Senator Davis began his professional career in 1959 as a teacher at Portland High School, where he taught Ancient History, and was a football assistant coach and volunteer varsity assistant baseball coach. In addition, Senator Davis was the Captain and played Center for the Portland Sea Hawks semi-pro Football team in the Atlantic Coast Football League. The Sea Hawks were the New England Champions in 1960 and again in 1961.

Inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s words in his1961 inauguration speech, “ ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country”, Senator Davis left Portland High and joined the Peace Corps. He was assigned to serve as a teacher at Bo Government School in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Upon Senator Davis’ return to Portland High School he taught history and psychology for a total of 36 years, becoming History Department Chair and Cluster II Coordinator. For 30 years he coached football, boys and girls soccer, cross country, indoor and outdoor track at the school.

Davis’ community activities have included two terms on the Falmouth School Board.

He coached Little League baseball for ten years in Falmouth and was Vice President of the League for 8 years. He was a charter member of the Falmouth Jaycees, the club which built the concession stand at the Little League’s Legion Field. As Vice President of the League he assisted in keeping the baseball/softball fields in playable condition.

Davis is a member of the Falmouth Historical Society, the Boys and Girls Club Alumni Association, and Holy Martyrs Catholic Church in Falmouth.

Senator Davis is currently serving his first term in the Maine Senate. He previously served eight years in the Maine House from 1998-2006, as a member of the Labor Committee his first two terms and serving on the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee for his last two terms.
