Augusta - Senator Lois Snowe-Mello (R-Androscoggin County) announced today that a $2.8 million Lewiston/Auburn railroad reconstruction project will advertise for construction in November. It will be located near the Auburn Intermodal facility and the Auburn Airport. Senator Snowe-Mello, a strong advocate for the project, had joined with others requesting its approval, and urged that it be expedited.
Senator Snowe-Mello stressed the importance of this news and its impact on the region's economy. "This project will create jobs, promote economic development, and give existing businesses additional ways of moving products." I am pleased to be part of the effort that led to approval a project that will benefit not only Auburn, but the entire region," said Snowe-Mello.
Maine Department of Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt had this to say regarding the project and Snowe-Mello's involvement: "Thanks to efforts such as yours, we are on track to advertise for construction in November. When completed, we expect this project will create jobs and economic activity in the region."
The Lewiston/Auburn railroad reconstruction project is for the design and construction of a portion of rail line for future freight service to Lewiston and Auburn; connecting St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad to the Lewiston/Auburn Railroad Mainline. It involves reconstructing 6600 feet of rail line that was formally the Rangeley Branch Line. It will further development of the surrounding property by bringing in new tenants to the site. It will also give existing businesses additional alternatives for the movement of freight. The project design has now been completed, and is only awaiting an Army Corp permit.
