Senator Roger Sherman (R-Aroostook County) has been appointed to a second term as a member of the Maine Canadian Legislative Advisory Commission.
Established in 1977, the Commission advises and assists the director in encouraging the increased cooperation between Maine and the neighboring Canadian provinces. The particular emphasis of the commission is on the shared experiences and goals of the two and in fostering greater educational, cultural, and economic exchange.
The commission is comprised of 8 members, 4 of whom including Sherman are appointed by the President of the Senate. Members are appointed for 2 year terms, and meet at least 4 times each year.
"I am honored to be reappointed to this commission," said Sherman, noting that "the duties of this commission fit nicely with the duties and responsibilities of the Citizens' Trade Policy Commission on which I also serve." That commission is charged with assessing the legal and economic impact of international trade policies and agreements on Maine's state and local laws, business environment and working conditions
"While our relations with Canada are important to the entire state of Maine, they are particularly so to those of us in Aroostook County. Our culture and heritage our closely aligned. Our families span the border and our economies are greatly impacted by each other. I look forward to working with my colleagues and with my Canadian neighbors to continue strengthening our relations."
Sherman is also a member of the Legislature's Joint Standing Committees on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry; and Utilities and Energy.
