Greetings. This is Senate Assistant Republican Leader Jon Courtney, of Sanford, and it is my pleasure to bring you this week's Republican Radio Message.

As we head into the Thanksgiving week, our thoughts inevitably turn to turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and gathering with family and friends. For many, however, those pleasant thoughts are overshadowed. Overshadowed by a struggling economy, the highest unemployment rate in decades, rising home heating prices, and the general uncertainty of the times...

GOP Leaders Respond to Governor's Curtailment Order

AUGUSTA - Senate Republican leaders are calling Governor Baldacci's curtailment order a cautious first step in what is sure to be a long journey to a re-balanced state budget. In the order, released earlier today, the governor has curtailed state spending by $63.1 million, effective immediately.

"The governor's curtailment order contains no real surprises, though it is more modest than expected. It's clear that the real work lies ahead, as we must close an ever-widening gap that could surpass $400 million during the remainder of the biennial budget," said Senate Republican Leader Kevin Raye (R-Perry)...

Greetings. This is Assistant Senate Republican leader Jon Courtney of Sanford and it is my pleasure to bring you this week's Republican Radio Message.

Today I want to let you know about the initiative, referendum and bond questions that will be on the November 3rd ballot.

Only 24 states have an initiative process, and Maine and Massachusetts are the only New England States that have it.

Maine adopted the initiative and referendum system in 1908. Despite serious and vocal opposition, voters ratified the initiative process by more than a 2 to 1 margin...

Repeal consolidation and treat all Mainers fairly

By Sen. David Trahan;

Question 3 on the November ballot asks Maine voters to reject the recently enacted law to consolidate Maine schools. This law was over-sold and corrupted by political horse trading. In time, it will destroy what remains of Maine's rural education system.

I ask you to vote Yes on Question 3 to repeal this failed mandate because it isn't fair and it simply hasn't worked.

Researchers at the University of Maine have studied the last consolidation effort in this state, the Sinclair Act, and its effect on administration in the 1950s and '60s...

Greetings. I'm State Senator Peter Mills from Somerset County with this week's Republican Radio Address.

Let's talk about an issue that has real impact on state finances every year and affects all of our teachers and state employees. That issue is our outdated public pension system.

Today's economy is competitive and constantly shifting. High school seniors are routinely advised to prepare for work in six to 10 different careers before they retire. Yet the teacher delivering that message is caught in a pension system with completely contrary incentives -- designed so that someone hired at age 22 will feel compelled to continue in the same work for 40 years...

As winter approaches, our thoughts turn to the cold weather and snow ahead - including the hazards of winter driving.

But we have more to worry about than snow and ice when it comes to the roads and highways so crucial to our ability to earn a living, get an education, seek medical care, attract jobs, and safely live everyday life. Many of our roads are in serious need of maintenance paving. We all see this as we swerve around potholes or avoid certain routes because of the bumpy rides...

We are now four months out from the end of the First Regular Session of the 124th Legislature AND the passage of LD 1495 - the so-called Tax Reform Package. And unless the People's Veto petition signatures are certified by the Secretary of State, we are less than 3 months away from the implementation of this sweeping new law.

And yet Maine Revenue Services, the executive agency charged with interpreting the law, enforcing that law, and auditing you the taxpayer to determine whether or not you have complied with the law - is still asking questions about what is and is not taxable...

Bipartisan is a word perhaps overused and thus the import of its meaning in situations such as this can be lost. It does not mean that legislators are indistinguishable in their political philosophies nor their beliefs on what government should do. Rather it means that in the face of our differences, we make a choice; to continue to work for the best possible outcome for Maine people -- not pick up our toys and go home...

By a vote of 10 to 2, the Legislature's Joint Standing Committee on Marine Resources gave its overwhelming support to a bill sponsored by Sen. David Trahan (R-Waldoboro), which creates a no-fee saltwater fishing registry.

In response to recently enacted federal rules which require states to track the number of saltwater anglers, Trahan sponsored legislation that would do so without imposing a tax or license fee on the anglers. The bill has been the subject of much debate as opponents suggested from the outset that the State was required to assess and collect a license fee or risk losing revenue to the federal government when it imposed a license...

Greetings. This is State Senator Kevin Raye, of Washington County, with this week's Maine Republican radio address.

On this Memorial Day weekend, as we gather with family and friends to enjoy back yard cookouts, open up the camp for the season, or take an afternoon nap in the hammock - we should all take time to pause and reflect upon the true spirit and meaning of Memorial Day.

This is a time for solemn remembrance as we honor the memory of those who gave their lives in defense of our freedoms, pay our respects to those who gave their youth in service to our nation, and renew our determination to fulfill our obligation to those who came home but left a part of themselves on the battlefield...

Greetings. This is Senator Richard Nass and it is my honor to bring you this week's Republican Radio Message.
