PORTLAND - Senator I. Joel
Abromson, 63, of Fall Lane died Monday, January 14, 2002 at Maine Medical
Center after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Senator Abromson was born
on August 15, 1938 in Auburn, Maine, a son of Ada & John Abromson. He
was a graduate of Edward Little High School and Bowdoin College where he
received a BA Degree in 1960. He served as President of the Student
Council at both schools.
He was employed with Maine
Rubber International from June 1960 to July of 1985, serving as President
from 1978 to 1985, President of Inter Trade Association from July 1985
until December of 1987 and Senior Associate of Cumberland Advisors from
January 1988 until the present.
Senator Abromson was a
member of the Maine Legislature from 1994 until the time of his death,
having served in the 117th, 118th, 119th and 120th Legislatures. He served
on the Joint Standing Committee on Banking & Insurance and was a
member of the Legislative Council Sub-Committee on Legislative Technology
and Information; Council of State Governments' Committee on Economic and
Fiscal Affairs; Senate Standing Committee on Conduct & Ethics; Senate
Committee on Total Quality Management, the Study Committee on School
Construction Issues and the Percent for Art Project for the Renovated
State House.
He was appointed a member
of the Governor's Advisory Board by Former Governor Joseph Brennan and
reappointed by Former Governor John McKernan. He was also a member of the
Boston District Export Council appointed by three successive U.S.
Secretaries of Commerce from 1983 - 1991.
Senator Abromson was Past
President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Portland in 1975,
Spurwink School 1987 - 1988, National United Jewish Appeal, Young
Leadership Cabinet 1976 - 1977 and the Jewish Federation of Southern Maine
in 1971.
He was a Trustee of Maine
Medical Center, World Affairs Council of Maine, Portland Savings Bank,
Temple Beth El, Maine Heart Association and the Jewish Federation of
Southern Maine. Senator Abromson served as Chair for the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum Campaign, Maine Committee; Jewish Federation of Southern
Maine 'Operation Moses,' and the Jewish Federation of Southern Maine,
Combined Appeal.
Senator Abromson's devotion
to his alma mater Bowdoin College was legendary. He was active since his
graduation, serving as President of the Alumni Council, Chair of the
Annual Fund, and as a member of the Board of Trustees. He received the
Alumni Service Award from the College in 1993.
He received the Legislative
Leadership Award from the Maine Audubon Society in 1995, the Appreciation
Award from the Spurwink School in 1992, the Bronze Keystone from the Boys
Club of America in 1986, the Campaign Leadership Award from the Jewish
Federation of Southern Maine in 1985, the 'E' Award from President Gerald
Ford for Excellence in Exporting in 1977, the Herbert Lehman Award from
the National Jewish Appeal in 1977, the Golden Boy Award from the Boys
& Girls Club of greater Portland in 1975 and the Israel Leadership
Award from the State of Israel Bonds in 1966. He had a great love for the
Jewish Community and the State of Israel.
Senator Abromson made many
visits to Israel, including seven as delegation leader. He brought U.S.
Senator William S. Cohen on his first visit to Israel. He visited Jewish
Communities throughout Western and Eastern Europe, Nazi Concentration
Camps at Dachau (Germany), Mathausen (Australia), and Auschwitz-Birkenau
(Poland).
Mr. Abromson loved being
with his family, especially his grandchildren and traveling around the
world with his wife Linda. Their travels included Europe, Australia, New
Zealand, South Africa and much of the Far East from China to Thailand. He
also enjoyed playing golf at the Portland Country Club.
Surviving are his wife of
42 years, Linda Elowitch Abromson of Portland; daughter Lori Yohann and
her husband Moshe; their children Avital (Tali), Daniel and Sivan of
Sarasota, Fl.; daughter Leslie Sherman and her husband Alan; their son
Zachary of Lexington, MA; son Eric and his wife Falamak of Los Angeles,
CA.; brother Morton Abromson and his wife Joan Nissman of Brookline, MA;
father-in-law Yudy Elowitch of Falmouth, ME; brother-in-law and
sister-in-law Robert and Annette Elowitch of Portland, ME.
