The Library is located in the State House on the corners of Capitol and State Streets in Augusta. The west entrance, facing the Cross Office Building, is open to the public, and the Library is on the 2nd floor.To get to the State House from I-95 get off at exit 109 and travel east on route 202 (Western Avenue). Continue to the first rotary where you take the first possible right turn onto State Street. Proceed to the traffic light where you will see the State House in front of you on the right. Turn right at the light onto Capitol Street for access to parking behind the Cross Office Building or in the Sewell Street garage.
Parking
Public parking is available behind the Cross Office Building or in the parking garage on the corner of Capitol and Sewell Streets (see tan areas blocked off on the map above). Parking is more difficult during the Legislative Session when there are fewer spaces for public parking and more visitors for public hearings and such.
Accessibility
Handicapped parking spaces are located between the State House and the Cross Office Building and on the Capitol Street side of the west entrance. From the lower parking spaces you may want to enter the Cross Office Building from which you can take an elevator down one floor and use the connector to the State House. To the right of the stairs is an elevator to the first floor lobby where you can get directions to the Library.
Security screening
Please be aware that security procedures are now in place for all visitors to the State House. Maine Capitol Police are conducting entry screening, similar to airport screening procedures, of all visitors to the Maine State House.
To expedite the screening process, please:- - arrive early for your State House tour to allow time for the screening process; time needed for the screening process will vary depending on other activities in the building;
- if possible, start a large group's visit to the State House Complex at the Maine State Museum where you can leave lunches and bags in the bins provided, or in the museum's coat room;
- if your group is going directly to the State House, please leave lunches, bags, unnecessary metal objects, and other personal belongings on the bus or in your car; and
- remember that cell phones, keys, and other personal belongs brought into the State House will be screened by an x-ray machine.
