About Rep. Wagner

Rep. Joe Wagner is serving his first term in the Maine House of Representatives. His major areas of focus are health care, education and taxation.

Born in the Bronx, he grew up in northern New Jersey. His father delivered WonderBread in Harlem and his mother was a bank teller in Englewood. Joe earned a bachelor’s degree in politics from Catholic University, and a master’s in public administration from the University of Southern California. Joe worked in the Department of Health and Human Services at the federal level and served as the financial manager for a $12 million Head Start program, which served the children of migrant farm-workers. For the past 25 years, Joe has been a high school social studies teacher, working at Cony, Massabesic and currently and Catherine McAuley.

His wife of 28 years, Mary Jane, is a registered nurse working at the infusion room at the Scarborough campus of the Maine Medical Center. They have three daughters: Sarah, who has a degree in political science from Mercyhurst College, is living and working in the Washington DC area; Rebecca, who has a degree in English from Hamilton College, works for the National Youth Leadership Conference: and Catherine, who is in her senior year at Brandeis University, is studying theater.
