About Rep. Flemings

Rep. Elspeth “Elsie” Flemings is serving her first term in the Legislature, where she is a member of the Taxation Committee. Rep. Flemings lives in Bar Harbor and works as the Coordinator of the Union River Watershed Coalition, a community organization that promotes the economic, social, and environmental health of the region through education, outreach, and research. Elsie serves as a board member of Healthy Acadia and Union River Healthy Communities, and she is an Incorporator at the Mount Desert Island Hospital.

Flemings has previously worked as a Congressional Legislative Aide in D.C. and as a fair trade organizer in Maine and nationally. She served as the Coordinator of SustainUS Maine and subsequently the Secretary of SustainUS National, a youth organization dedicated to promoting environmental, social and economic sustainability. Elsie participated in the 2005 UN Climate Change Treaty Negotiations in Montreal, and was selected by the U.S. State Department as the youth representative on the U.S. government's delegation to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. Elsie received her bachelor’s degree from College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor.

In her work and life, Rep. Flemings is committed to promoting vibrant communities, economic opportunities and fairness, and environmental sustainability here in Maine and beyond.
