Rep. Dunphy's Bill to Help Anson-Madison Water District to Become Law

New law will allow town councils to fill vacancies on water district board of trustees

AUGUSTA - A bill introduced by Rep. Larry Dunphy (R-Embden) to aid the Anson and Madison Water District has been signed by Governor Paul LePage and will become law on July 30, or 90 days after the Legislature's expected adjournment on May 1.

Anson and Madison merged their water districts in 2011 upon an act of the legislature and have been working their way through the consolidation process. Local leaders wanted municipal officers to have the flexibility to appoint members to the water district's board of trustees when a vacancy occurs, so as to avoid an expensive special election.

Rep. Dunphy, the ranking Republican on the Energy, Utilities, and Technology Committee, introduced LD 1693 to make it happen.

"Most of the work we do in Augusta is done on a bipartisan basis, and this is an example of that," said Rep. Dunphy. "One of the things I enjoy most about my job as a state representative is the ability to help my community at the state level by sponsoring commonsense legislation like this to help local government run a little more smoothly."
