House Republican Leader's Statement on Medicaid Expansion Bill

AUGUSTA - House Republican Leader Ken Fredette of Newport issued the following statement regarding the upcoming vote on LD 1578, the Medicaid expansion bill sponsored by House Speaker Mark Eves (D-North Berwick).

"Speaker Eves and I may have strong differences on economic and health policy, but I would like to commend him for his fair and heartfelt effort on behalf of a cause he believes in. I believe just as strongly that Medicaid expansion would be bad for our state's economy and budget, and yesterday's public poll indicates that an increasing number of Mainers agree as they begin to learn more."

LD 1578 and another Medicaid expansion bill, a concept draft introduced by Senator Troy Jackson, are expected to be vetoed by Governor Paul LePage, who has 10 days after enactment to do so. The Legislature will return for "Veto Day" after that time period has elapsed in order to sustain or override various vetoes.
