Statement of House GOP Leader on Dems Killing Teen Job Opportunities

AUGUSTA - House Republican Leader Ken Fredette of Newport issued the following statement regarding the party line rejection of LD 1698, a commonsense bill to allow 14 and 15 year olds to obtain work permits directly from the Department of Labor during the summer and to allow them to work in movie theaters and bowling alleys.

"There are teens who will continue to go halfway through the summer without work permits and be arbitrarily denied the ability to work at bowling alleys and movie theaters simply because Democrats chose to be partisan. I don't think there's a single parent in Maine who would object to this bill, but there are dozens of liberal politicians in Augusta who do. Republicans will continue to push for more opportunities for young Mainers to gain valuable experience and work ethic and we will continue to try and persuade our Democratic colleagues to do the same."

The bill was supported by both superintendents and the Department of Labor. It faced no opposition at its public hearing. Maine Democrats in recent years have used pro-jobs proposals for young people as political weapons against Republicans.
