Rep. Dunphy's Bill to Help Anson-Madison Water District Receives Unanimous Support in Legislative Committee

Bill would allow town councils to fill vacancies on water district board of trustees

AUGUSTA - A bill introduced by Rep. Larry Dunphy (R-Embden) to aid the Anson and Madison Water District received the unanimous support of the Maine Legislature's Energy, Utilities, and Technology Committee Wednesday.

Anson and Madison merged their water districts in 2011 upon an act of the legislature and have been working their way through the consolidation process. Local leaders wanted municipal officers to have the flexibility to appoint members to the water district's board of trustees when a vacancy occurs, so as to avoid an expensive special election.

Rep. Dunphy, the ranking Republican on the Energy, Utilities, and Technology Committee, introduced LD 1693 to make it happen.

"I'm glad to see the committee come together in a bipartisan manner to help the local community solve a problem," said Rep. Dunphy. "I'd like to thank Clarence Ayotte of the Water District for coming to Augusta to testify and help explain the need for this legislation to the committee."

The bill will now go before the full House and Senate for approval. Rep. Dunphy can be reached at
