2013 Energy Reform Pays Dividends With Regional Natural Gas Collaborative

Rep. Fredette joins Gov. LePage in celebrating move to low-cost energy source for Maine families, businesses

AUGUSTA - House Republican Leader Ken Fredette of Newport on Thursday congratulated Governor Paul LePage and other New England governors on a historic agreement to expand the availability of affordable natural gas energy throughout the region.

Working with Democratic lawmakers and Governor LePage, Rep. Fredette helped lead the effort last year to pass LD 1559, an omnibus energy reform bill that was the catalyst for the regional collaborative announced today.

"New England states can now work together to ensure that the supply of affordable natural gas coming into the region is sufficient to meet the demand," said Rep. Fredette. "I applaud Governor LePage's efforts to reduce Maine's energy costs, making our state more competitive for jobs and helping families stay warm in the winter without breaking the bank."

In addition to creating the regional dialogue that led to the plan announced today to increase New England's natural gas pipeline capacity, the new law gives important authority to the state's Public Utilities Commission (PUC) chairman.

The PUC now has the authority to purchase up to 200 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. Today's agreement would bring an additional 600 million cubic feet per day into New England.

"For too many years, Maine has been unable to compete for jobs because we have relied on expensive and outdated forms of energy," added Rep. Fredette. "With the recent energy reform law and the governors' collaborative, we can begin to change that and make Maine an economic powerhouse."
