Willette: New Low in Unemployment Good News for Young Mainers

LePage reforms mean more jobs, less debt, less welfare dependency in Maine's future

AUGUSTA - Assistant House Republican Leader Alex Willette of Mapleton applauded news today from the Maine Department of Labor that shows a post-Recession low in Maine's unemployment rate of 6.7 percent for October. That figure is down from 6.9 percent in September and 7.2 percent a year ago and compares to a current national unemployment rate of 7.3 percent.

"Young people have been leaving the state and avoiding Maine for decades because of a lack of economic opportunity," said Rep. Willette. "Something needed to change, and we can see that it has. Pro-growth reforms instituted by Gov. LePage and Republicans have created a brighter future for young people in Maine with lower unemployment, less debt, and a seismic culture shift in state government."

At 24, Willette is the youngest member of legislative leadership in Maine's history and the youngest currently serving in the United States. A Maine native and graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington, he is currently pursuing a law degree at the University of Maine.

Recent census data shows a net out-migration of young, single, college-educated people from Maine.

"People my age want to see some changes in Maine's economy and Governor LePage is delivering them," said Rep. Willette. "Governor LePage implemented health insurance reform that has reduced premiums for young people, paid off old state debt while keeping new debt to a minimum, and reformed Maine's education system to better equip students for the future."

"My generation may not know it yet, but Governor LePage's policies are working for them," he added.
