Local Lawmakers' Statement on Houlton Smith & Wesson Layoffs

37 workers to be laid off at handgun manufacturing facility

AUGUSTA - State Representative Joyce Fitzpatrick (R-Houlton) issued the following statement regarding the recently-announced lay-offs of 37 workers at the Smith & Wesson plant in Houlton.

"My deepest sympathies are with the workers at Smith & Wesson and their families, especially with the holidays around the corner. I will remain in touch with the Maine Department of Labor to ensure that my constituents who are affected by this terrible news have all the resources available to them to get through this difficult time and to find new opportunities."

Assistant House Republican Leader Alex Willette, of nearby Mapleton, added the following.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families in the County who will be affected. My office will be doing all that it can to help those who were laid off."

The lawmakers encouraged affected people to contact their State House office at 287-1440 for any assistance they may need or questions they may have about state government programs available to them.
