AUGUSTA - Assistant House Republican Leader Alex Willette of Mapleton on Monday congratulated J.D. Irving, Ltd. On its planned expansion in the Aroostook County town of Ashland. The company announced the $30 million investment in a new sawmill that will create 60 jobs in a press release Monday.
"This is really great news for the County and the hardworking people who live there," said Willette, who grew up in the Aroostook County town of Mapleton and now represents a large portion of central Aroostook County. "We've faced economic setbacks that pre-date the recession, and what we need is a permanent pattern of industry to move in and provide economic stability in the region. These jobs represent that type of development, with manufacturing linked to our vast natural resources. I commend J.D. Irving for their investment in Maine people."
"In Augusta, we're working hard to make sure that Maine's tax and regulatory environment is competitive and that our energy prices and transportation infrastructure can accommodate and attract economic growth," added Willette.
