AUGUSTA - The Council of State Governments has selected Maine state representative Corey Wilson (R-Augusta) to attend its Robert Thompson Eastern Leadership Academy next month. Wilson was one of 25 public servants to be accepted to attend the conference in Philadelphia on August 4-8 of this year.
The Council of State Governments is a nonprofit, nonpartisan national think tank founded in 1933 and dedicated to educating government and elected officials, helping them to perform their duties more effectively and collaborate across regions and all three branches of government to better serve the public.
The Robert Thompson Eastern Leadership Academy is an annual conference of state legislators, executive branch officials, judges, and other public servants. The program is closely affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania's Fels Institute of Government and Annenberg Public Policy Center, which provide esteemed faculty to conduct interactive discussions and workshops. The four-day retreat focuses on leadership skills, time management, media relations, constituent services, and more. Participants share policy ideas and experiences and each year sees new topics of discussion, such as civil discourse and social media.
"I am very excited about this opportunity to become a better advocate for my constituents," said Rep. Wilson. "I put a lot of effort into my first session as a state legislator, and this conference will give me training to hone those efforts and do even more for the people of Augusta in next year's legislative session."
Rep. Wilson spearheaded several high-profile issues in his first session, including the effort to protect the private information of concealed handgun permit holders and keep Augusta residents safe from formerly institutionalized individuals found not criminally responsible for violent acts.
"Your accomplishments and commitment to public service make you an ideal candidate for the program," read Wilson's acceptance letter.
Wilson is a 28-year old Marine Corps veteran of Iraq who is currently pursuing his Masters of Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University while working as a Realtor. "I have a thirst for knowledge and education, and this conference is the type of environment where I thrive and learn," said Wilson. "I'm really looking forward to it."
