House Republicans Recognize Teacher Appreciation Week (Day 5)

Each day will share stories of teachers who changed their lives for the better

AUGUSTA - May 6-10 is Teacher Appreciation Week, a time when Americans take a moment to recognize the hard and important work teachers do every day. Each day this week, Republican state representatives are telling their own stories of teachers who made a difference in their lives.

Rep. Lance Harvell (R-Farmington) offered Friday's story of a teacher who stands out. A mill worker and Air Force Veteran, Harvell is a nontraditional student at the University of Maine at Farmington, majoring in history and political science.

"Many children are born with a natural disadvantage in life, and it takes hard work, compassion, and patience to help them overcome the challenges they face. My wife, Bernadette, is one of the few who have those gifts. As a speech therapist, she spends her time in the schools of School Administrative District 58 in Franklin County, helping children address their various speech defects. She puts in extraordinarily long hours at home so that she is completely prepared when her students need her the most.

One of her students has an insatiable appetite for politics. On her own time, Bernadette took him to the State House to watch the Legislature in action. He was absolutely enamored by the speeches given during debate on the House floor, and to see this child so inspired was the most moving experience of my time in the State House.

Maine children, especially those at a disadvantage, are fortunate to be in the care of such thoughtful and dedicated teachers as my wife. Bernadette is an inspiration to me and to the children with whom she works, and for that, she is the teacher who has had the greatest impact on my life."
