House Republicans Recognize Teacher Appreciation Week (Day 4)

Each day will share stories of teachers who changed their lives for the better

AUGUSTA - May 6-10 is Teacher Appreciation Week, a time when Americans take a moment to recognize the hard and important work teachers do every day. Each day this week, Republican state representatives are telling their own stories of teachers who made a difference in their lives.

This week, Rep. Corey Wilson (R-Augusta), is sharing the story of an outstanding teacher of his. Wilson, 28, is a graduate of Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Maine, and Park University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Business Management. He is currently pursuing a Master's of Business Administration with a concentration in health care from Southern New Hampshire University.

Said Wilson: "One teacher who really stood out in my high school days was Mrs. Lori Laney of Lawrence High School in Fairfield. I was an energetic teenager who responded well to interaction and hands-on learning - although I wouldn't have known it were it not for Mrs. Laney. My competitive spirit and constant search for a challenge is what led me to join the Marine Corps, and it's also what got me through Algebra with the help of a good teacher.

Mrs. Laney would issue bets to me, challenging me to achieve a certain grade or master a difficult math problem. This allowed me to focus and made learning not just about the math, but about overcoming obstacles. The learning environment in her classroom was always relaxed and fun - a word I never would have associated with math. She did an incredible job at generating interest among her students, corralling an otherwise raucous group of teenagers and making them want to pay attention.

I will always be grateful to Mrs. Laney not only for helping me to learn Algebra, but helping me to discover what motivates me. Teachers like her deserve a raise."
