For Immediate Release
AUGUSTA - May 6-10 is Teacher Appreciation Week, a time when Americans take a moment to recognize the hard and important work teachers do every day. Today, Representatives Ken Fredette and Alexander Willette took time to share their stories of the teachers who have made the biggest difference in their lives. Each day for the rest of the week, Republican state representatives will tell their own stories of teachers who made a difference in their lives.
House Republican Leader Ken Fredette of Newport issued the following statement.
"The teacher who has made the biggest difference in my life is my wife, Cynthia, who has worked tirelessly as a first grade teacher for the past 20 years. Every evening she heads to bed at about seven o'clock and works on her lesson plans for hours. When she tells me about the challenges students face these daysincluding some challenges my own children have facedand her efforts to help them overcome those challenges, I can't help but be amazed by her dedication and patience. I try every day to let her experiences guide my decision-making process on multiple matters before the Legislature, and I can only hope that every Maine student is fortunate enough to have a teacher as caring and committed as my wife, Cynthia."
Assistant House Republican Leader Alexander Willette of Mapleton said the following.
"This weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Wellington Elementary School in Monticello to learn about some of the great things that small, Aroostook County schools are doing. The visit reminded me of my great experience at Mapleton Elementary School. Mrs. Brabant, my first grade teacher, instilled in me a love of learning that follows me to this day. Mrs. Hallowell and Mrs. LaPointe, in second and third grade, helped make me a stronger readera skill that has helped me to succeed in law school. In fifth grade, Mrs. Hamel brought current events to the classroom and sparked my interest in politics with discussions about the 2000 presidential primary races. I am thankful to all of the teachers who went the extra mile so that I could have the opportunities I have today."
