House Republican Leader Ken Fredette (R-Newport) issued the following statement on today's passage of the supplemental budget to close a $153 million budget shortfall through the remainder of fiscal year 2013.
"Hopefully we will be ready to address the state's chronic overspending when crafting the two-year budget. Maine's welfare agency is now consuming about 47 percent of the budget, crowding out funding for education and other vital services. Our economy can't get moving until we start seeing more money in Mainers' pockets and less in DHHS spending accounts. Republicans will not support raising taxes to keep feeding a government agency that has almost doubled in size over the past 10 years."
