House Republicans Name Committee Members

Committees ready to hit the ground running on Jan. 8

AUGUSTA - House Republicans today named their members to the Legislature's 17 joint standing committees. All except the Government Oversight Committee will have four Republican House members. The 12-member Government Oversight Committee consists of three members from each caucus.

"I am extremely confident in this team of legislators," said House Republican Leader Ken Fredette (R-Newport). "The incumbents are coming off of a term where they gained a lot of experience building consensus on important bills, and that, coupled with the new energy and ideas of our freshmen members, will ensure Republicans will get a lot of good work done."

Assistant Republican Leader Alexander Willette (R-Mapleton) concurred. "Matching the right person to the right committee can be difficult, but we're lucky to have a very well-rounded and hardworking caucus," he said. "That definitely made the job of committee selection easier."

Weeks ago, House Republican leadership asked caucus members to pick their top three committee choices and note their skills and experience that would make them a good fit for their picks. Leaders Fredette and Willette then determined committee choices based on those requests, last term's appointments, and geographic fits.

All four Republican members of the Appropriations Committee remaining from the 125th Legislature are returning to that committee for the 126th, led by Rep. Kathy Chase (R-Wells). "I am very pleased that Republican leadership made the wise choice of putting experienced members back on the Appropriations Committee," she said. "I'm thrilled to be working with the same team that paid down hospital debt and solved massive shortfalls."

The Legislature and its committees are expected to reconvene on January 8th.
