House Republican Leader Ken Fredette (R-Newport) issued the following statement in response to the Forbes Magazine "Best States for Business" ranking which showed Maine in last place, 50th, for the third year in a row:
"The Forbes report cited three primary factorshigh taxes, energy costs, and median age. We have been working on taxes and energy costs in the face of opposition, and reforms we made last year and earlier this year are just beginning to take effect, but it is clear that we must do more. I hope that Democrats will prioritize the factors outlined in the Forbes Magazine ranking and that we can work together to make the changes Maine people need."
The Forbes report cited data showing a 0.6% contraction of Maine's economy from 2006-2011 as worse than the national average. Republicans gained control of the Governor's mansion and the Legislature beginning with the January 2011 session and most reforms became law in late 2011 to early 2012, with many tax cuts and other measures yet to kick in. ###
