House GOP Leader Fredette to Visit the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter

Annual issues breakfast brings together policymakers, charitable causes

AUGUSTA - House Republican Leader Rep. Ken Fredette (R-Newport) will be attending the annual issues breakfast at the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter on Thursday, December 13. After introductions, topics of the breakfast meeting will include General Assistance, targeted case management, outreach, shelter funding, and possible legislative action.

"As we consider the budget difficulties before us, it is important that we remember the least fortunate members of our communities," said Rep. Fredette. "There are still many changes that can be made to our public assistance programs, but we must protect those most desperately in need. I admire the work of the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter and fully support their efforts."

The 125th Legislature was able to close a $220 million budget gap at DHHS earlier this year while preserving benefits for Maine's most needy. The Legislature achieved this by eliminating unfilled staff positions; substituting generic for brand-name drugs under MaineCare; capping lifetime TANF benefits at five years; trimming Maine's Medicaid eligibility standards, which were previously 35% more generous than the average state; and other measures. The bipartisan budgets also increased funding for some programs, however, such as indigent legal services, which received an extra $450,000 and will aid many of the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter's clients.

The breakfast will be held at the shelter at 263 Main Street in Bangor on Thursday from 7:45 to 9:00 A.M. The point of contact for the event is Executive Director Dennis Marble at 947-0045 or
