AUGUSTA - State Rep. Jane Knapp served as a faculty member in residence last month for a six-day program designed to help participants learn skills and develop networks that empower them to become civic and public leaders.
The program, part of the University of Maine's National Education for Women (NEW) Leadership initiative, brought together 28 women to hear representatives from a variety of fields - government, academia and the private and nonprofit sectors. The Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at UMaine's Orono campus sponsored the program.
"It was an honor to serve as a faculty member in residence, and I enjoyed being back on the Orono campus. It reminded me of my time there in graduate school," said Rep. Knapp (R-Gorham), who stayed in a residence hall and served as a mentor to the students. "It was a very enjoyable learning environment, and I'm sure everyone involved found it to be a productive six days. I wish all the young ladies success in whatever ways they choose to demonstrate their leadership skills in Maine."
The 28 participants in NEW Leadership this year included female students from the University of Maine System, the Maine Community College System, Bowdoin College, Bates College, Colby College, Husson University, Thomas College, Carnegie-Mellon University and St. Lawrence University.
Highlights of the week included a day at the State House in Augusta, a dinner and tour at the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan, and a dinner at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono with keynote speaker Lilly Ledbetter, whose fight for equal pay from Goodyear led Congress to enact the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009.
The NEW Leadership program originated at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University in New Jersey. In 2009, the University of Maine's Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center brought NEW Leadership to Maine, and 106 students have graduated from the program in its first four years. It is the only leadership program in Maine dedicated ti college women. ###
