AUGUSTA - State Rep. Karen Foster, a first-term legislator from Augusta, registered a strong voting record during the 125th Legislature. She was present for 98.6 percent of the roll call votes taken in the Maine House during the 117 days it was in session.
Rep. Foster, who represents Vassalboro, Windsor and part of Augusta, said residents of her district elected her to be their voice in the Legislature. "I regard voting as a sacred trust," she said. "It is a fundamental responsibility of a legislator, and I do my utmost to balance what is in the best interests of my district and the state as a whole."
Rep. Foster noted that she is proud of the work of the 125th, which includes regulatory relief, welfare reform, the largest tax cut in Maine history and the cleaning up of the Maine Turnpike Authority and other troubled agencies.
The Legislature also reformed Maine's health insurance law to promote competition and bring the system more in line with the American mainstream. Early results show the new approach is successfully holding down or reducing rates in the individual and small-group markets.
"There were some very difficult challenges this session, which included moving the state budget to a more sustainable level," she said. "We had to deal with a number of tough issues that should have been addressed years ago.
"Going forward, the state will be in better shape," she added. "Welfare reform is designed to protect Maine's most vulnerable residents while discouraging able-bodied people from making welfare a way of life. Tax cuts will save Mainers hundreds of millions of dollars over the next few years. Overall, we made the state much more business-friendly to help promote job creation and a stronger economy to benefit everyone."
During the two years of the legislative term, members dealt with 2,049 bills, with 700 becoming law. New statutes range from large bills, such as the state budget, to minor technical changes. The House held 369 roll call votes, which form the basis for a voting record. ###
