Rep. Sanderson compiles excellent voting record

AUGUSTA - State Rep. Deborah Sanderson, a first-term legislator from Chelsea, compiled an excellent voting record during the 125th Legislature. She was present for 98.1 percent of the roll call votes taken, one of the best records in the Maine House.

"Voting on issues that affect the people of my district is the most important part of my job as a legislator," said Rep. Sanderson, who pulls double duty by serving on two committees, Health and Human Services and Criminal Justice and Public Safety. "Legislators have many responsibilities, such as constituent service and committee work, but voting is critical. The citizens of District 52 sent me to Augusta to be their voice, an honor that I take very seriously."

During the two years of the legislative term, lawmakers dealt with 2,049 bills. Of these, 700 became law, ranging from large bills, such as the state budget, to minor technical changes. Many bills are voted unanimously to either pass or fail out of committee, and the House usually follows the committee lead with a unanimous vote on the floor that is not recorded. This procedure is called passing a bill "under the hammer." The House held 369 roll call votes, which form the basis for a voting record.

Rep. Sanderson said she is proud of the work that has been accomplished, which includes reform of the public pension system, regulatory relief, welfare reform and the largest tax cut in Maine history. The Legislature also reformed Maine's health insurance law to bring it more in line with the American mainstream. Early results show the new approach is holding down rates in the individual and small-group markets.

"Our emphasis has been on creating jobs and assuring a better economic future for Maine residents," she said. "If you consider the overall record, this Legislature focused on making Maine more business-friendly, with lower taxes and less regulation, and using taxpayer dollars more efficiently. We tackled a number of vital issues that should have been addressed years ago."

Rep. Sanderson's district includes Chelsea, part of Jefferson, Somerville, Washington, Whitefield and the unorganized territory of Hibberts Gore. She is a certified nursing assistant with experience in human resources and works at the central office of Maine Veterans' Homes. ###
