Major General Libby to Address Joint Session of Legislature

AUGUSTA - Adjutant General John W. Libby will address a joint session of the Legislature for the first time on Thursday, February 16. In addition to speaking to the state of defense, veterans and emergency management matters, General Libby will also recognize Maine's National Guard families that have lost a loved one during deployment since 2001.

State Rep. Ken Fredette (R-Newport) submitted a bill last session that authorizes the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House to invite the Adjutant General to appear annually and address a joint session.

"It is only fitting that we, the elected members of the Legislature, recognize those families that have lost loved ones while protecting our freedoms and liberties," said Rep. Fredette. "Our Maine Army and Air National Guard citizen-soldiers and their families put duty to our nation and state ahead of their own interests. I am proud to play a small part in recognizing their unique and unselfish contributions."

Maine's National Guard began in 1893, when a revision of military law changed the designation from Maine Volunteer Militia to National Guard, State of Maine.

From ground conflicts in Southeast Asia to the humanitarian crisis in Louisiana to support of air superiority in the Middle East, Maine's National Guard has responded to the call of country and duty. "They do a remarkable job, and they have a remarkable reputation," General Libby said. "It reflects well on the entire Maine National Guard and the state as a whole."

Major General Libby will address the joint session on February 16 at 10 a.m. in the House of Representatives. ###
