Rep. Fredette: Death of Pfc. Springman saddens Nokomis High School community

AUGUSTA - State Rep. Ken Fredette said today he is greatly saddened by the death of Private First Class Tyler Springman, of Hartland, who was killed in combat in Afghanistan on Sunday.

Pfc. Springman, 19, was a recent graduate of Nokomis Regional High School, which is in Rep. Fredette's House district. He joined the Army in June 2010 and completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

"Tyler Springman decided early in his life to give back to his country and his community," said Rep. Fredette. "The Nokomis High School community is deeply saddened today, but we are proud of his service. We extend our prayers and thoughts to his family during this sorrowful time."

Pfc. Springman was killed by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar province on July 17. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska. The unit began its one-year deployment to Afghanistan in May.

An Army sergeant from Pennsylvania also was killed in the IED attack. Seven other soldiers were wounded.

Rep. Fredette (R-Newport) is a major in the Maine National Guard, serving at the 101st Air Refueling Wing, in Bangor. ###
